It Should Be A Much Bigger Deal That The Writer Of Dumb And Dumber (Among Other Classics) Won An Oscar Last Night
Everyone is freaking out about last night’s Oscars. “Oh my god, Lady Gaga” this, and “I can’t believe Bohemian Rhapsody won every award” that. Blah, blah, blahhhhhhh. Same shit, different year. But for some reason, nobody is talking about how one of the most important filmmakers in history collected his first gold statue. A man whose legacy is up there with Spielberg, Scorsese, and Kubrick.
And then it happened last night. Green Book won for best original screenplay. It’s a film about a green book written by Nick Vallelonga, Brian Currie and Peter Farrelly. Maybe you know the name Peter Farrelly, possibly it rings a bell. He’s only the man responsible for some of the GREATEST MOVIES TO EVER BE MADE.
Dumb and Dumber, a cinematic masterpiece.
There’s Something About Mary, the movie that changed the hair gel game forever.
Me, Myself, And Irene, another classic that we don’t appreciate enough.
Shallow Hal (to be honest I don’t love Shallow Hal but it’s still pretty funny)
and of course, the incomparable
Stuck On You, a movie that dared to go where no film had gone before.
So there I was last night, sitting on my couch enjoying the show, and then I heard the name Peter Farrelly out of nowhere and I nearly jumped through my ceiling. I couldn’t believe it. I guess it’s like how they gave Leo the Oscar for The Revenant, the Academy gave Farrelly the Oscar to correct their mistake for the Dumb And Dumber snub.
It just goes to show the cream always rises to the top. There’s a reason Farrelly has been dominating Hollywood for the last 2 decades, and finally his work has been appreciated as such.
A similar story was how Melissa McCarthy was nominated for best actress. I love when actors/actresses who aren’t known for serious roles decide to flex and be like “oh yeah, I am actually really good at this whole acting thing, I just prefer to do movies that I enjoy making”. I always knew McCarthy was bound for big things after she dominated, absolutely DOMINATED Bridesmaids. She should have been nominated for that movie but the Academy is so stuffy.
It’s like how Jonah Hill can do Grandma’s Boy and Forgetting Sarah Marshall and This Is the End, but then also get nominated for an Oscar for Moneyball and win one for Wolf of Wallstreet. These people are so talented it’s wild.
So congrats to the hero Peter Farrelly. Hopefully this doesn’t deter him from making more movies like Dumb and Dumber. You proved you can win an Oscar, don’t sell out on us now.
